Legal and Illegal Camps Morocco - New Law 2011 !

The surfing industry in Morocco has been booming for a while, however this unfortunately goes hand in hand with numerous illegal, money-thirsty surf camps, surf schools, accommodations and holiday providers. They may have nice websites, but their accommodation and ways of handling business are questionable.

The A.E.P.S.S is the Association of South Morocco (Agadir region), which strives to give guidance on this issue by introducing a new law and providing a list of all the LEGAL CAMPS on their site:

The site is updated weekly so don’t be misled by the words: “We are on the list, but it’s just not been updated yet”. Not on the list means ILLEGAL and not permitted by law.

Over the past year there has been an influx of new camps that are not registered as businesses, or anywhere near having approved accommodation to house their guests. As a result of this a law has now been introduced in South Morocco, in the following regions: SIDI IFNI, AGADIR, TAGHAZOUT, TAMRAGHT and IMSOUANE

For those of you who do not yet know why a law is being introduced…
There are numerous people and companies who come to Morocco in the winter to make quick money, and in the summer they leave without investing any money in the country at all through housing, cars, taxes and employees. They bring everything from Europe including staff that work for free. In no European country would this be accepted and the case is the same for Morocco.

More importantly these unregistered companies have no papers and therefore no house, transport or surf school insurance. As a surf camp you certainly have to deal with risks. The transport, housing and teaching must be licensed, safe and professional. Often many illegal surf camps lack simple precautions such as fire safety, first aid kits, emergency exits and satisfactory transport vehicles. Many illegal surf camps use houses and vehicles that are not inspected and approved or even insured for tourism. In the unfortunate case of an accident, your personal insurance policy can reject your claim on the grounds that you booked at an unapproved or unofficial company.

The uninformed holiday-goer often doesn’t consider the fact that he or she may be booking a holiday with an unofficial company. All they have is holiday on their mind – and rightly so! Holidays are a time to relax, and you shouldn’t have to worry about these sorts of things.

For this reason the A.E.P.S.S has developed this law. On the A.E.P.S.S website you will find all the licensed surf camps and surf schools in South Morocco that have all the necessary papers and licences. This should guarantee that you book with an approved and worthy company. This doesn’t however always guarantee that you will be satisfied with your holiday of course. The level of quality and service does vary between camps. But now that you have been better informed you are on your way to a well-organised, safe, successful holiday.

The websites of all the legal surf camps and surf schools should display the A.E.P.S.S logo! The logo on their website together with their company name on the official list should guarantee that you’re staying somewhere you can trust.

If however you choose to book at a surf camp or surf school that is not on the list this could result in your holiday ending early. You will simply be sent away from the beach together with the company. This means extra costs and not the surf holiday that you worked so hard for.

Here is a list of all the legal camps:

Aloha Surf Camp

Anchor Point Surf Camp

Atlantic Surf

Anchor Point Surf Camp

Endo Surf

Dfrost Almugar Surf House

Dynamic Loisirs

Maroc Surf Camp

Maroc Surf Adventures

Surf Berbere

Surf Maroc

Surf Town

Quick surf Maroc

Morocco is a fantastic holiday destination where you can endlessly travel, surf and explore. If you decide to go for a surf camp, surf house or surf school please take the time to look at the list of trustworthy companies!

Surfing in Morocco remains a top destination for all levels in winter as well as summer! Cheap, lots of sun and good waves together with this new law guarantee a fine, worry-free, trustworthy holiday just like it should be!

Happy surfing,
